In 2010, I travelled to Yemen on a short-term contract with UNICEF to support media relations during a humanitarian crisis that had displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians. During the assignment, I served as communications officer ad interim for six months, producing media materials and field stories, and managing country office communications, with a focus on highlighting the humanitarian response.

This story was reported from a displacement camp in Haradh, near Yemen’s northern border. It focuses on local volunteers who were working tent by tent to promote hygiene practices and help prevent the spread of disease in crowded camp conditions. Through interviews with displaced families and community volunteers, the story illustrates how simple public-health measures — safe water storage, sanitation, and hygiene awareness — can play a crucial role in protecting vulnerable populations during emergencies.
